October 2nd

1:50 A.M.

This was weird.

Her quiet, empty little house was now so full of people she barely had enough chairs for everyone to sit in. The eight massive men seemed to take up all the space in her living room. They were sprawled out along the three-seater couch, sitting on the two armchairs, and had pulled in the four chairs from her kitchen table.

Although there was a spare chair for her to sit in, Mackenzie was on the move. Back and forth between the kitchen and the living room, making coffee, finding snacks, anything to keep her mind occupied so it didn’t wander to the man who had been dragged out of here an hour ago.

Anything to avoid Luca.

She had no idea what he was doing here. He’d told her that Eagle Oswald, the oldest of the six siblings who owned and ran Prey Security, had been concerned her brother would come after her again and had put two of his men—Tank and Rock, who apparently were part of a different team who worked for Prey—on her. They hadn’t been able to get to her quickly enough when she’d been attacked in the parking garage because they’d been trying to keep an eye on her covertly.

That all made sense, and she greatly appreciated Eagle Oswald caring enough about her to keep someone on her, but what didn’t make sense was why Luca was here now.

“Come sit, darlin,” Surf said, patting the spot beside him on the couch. “You’ve been fussing around taking care of everyone, but I think you’re the one who needs a little care right now.”

Luca shot a glare at his friend but didn’t comment as Mackenzie reluctantly went and took a seat on the couch, wondering whether he didn’t like the idea of her cozying up next to his friend, even though she wasn’t really cozying up to Surf. Now that she didn’t have anything to do, her nerves started to get the better of her. Her hands began to tremble, and she pressed them together between her knees, not wanting the guys to notice. They were all warriors, heroes, and here she had hidden like a coward when that man broke into her house.

“Here.” Luca thrust a mug of steaming tea at her, and she took it, wondering how he knew she liked tea and not coffee.

“Can you tell us what happened tonight, Mackenzie?” Arrow asked gently.

All the guys had been so nice to her, taking care to make sure she was all right. She would have bet anything upon seeing them that they didn’t a sweet bone in their bodies, and she was sure people thought that about them all the time, but really, they were like great, big, kind of scary-looking, ridiculously hot and attractive teddy bears.

“Umm, yeah, I guess,” she said, not really wanting to go over it again. How was she going to stay in this house knowing she would never be safe here? “I don’t really have much to tell you, though.
